Features and aims of the course

This programme prepares professionals responsible for the care of individuals in clinically unstable conditions or at potential risk of life-threatening deterioration. The Specialist Nurse works in the “critical care area,” a setting characterised by high care complexity, rapid and integrated decision-making, multidisciplinary teams, and the use of advanced technologies for monitoring and supporting vital functions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In addition to the common educational framework on leadership and research, the specialist pathway includes:

  • Advanced Monitoring and Technologies: Systematic assessment and invasive/non-invasive monitoring, use of extracorporeal support systems, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Emergency Management: Intra- and extra-hospital triage, management of mass casualty incidents and disaster medicine, advanced decision-making algorithms (e.g. ACLS, trauma care).
  • Complex Care: Pain management, anaesthesia and analgesia-sedation, end-of-life care pathways, and organ and tissue donation processes.
  • Clinical Placement (30 ECTS credits): In Intensive and Sub-Intensive Care Units, emergency and urgent care services (EMS/118 and Emergency Departments), operating theatres, and highly specialised centres.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

You will become a Specialist Nurse in Critical Care and Emergency Nursing. You will work in intra- and extra-hospital emergency settings, intensive and sub-intensive care units, operating theatres, and highly specialised centres. You will also be able to provide specialist consultancy for complex cases, including outside critical care environments.
