Features and aims of the course

The Biological Sciences Course includes twenty exams and practical laboratory and internship activities.
During your studies, you will acquire theoretical and operational grounding in various biology fields enabling you to carry out biological and instrumental broad-spectrum analyses, aimed at both research and monitoring, and at control activities in the fields of industrial and environmental biology.
The course will prepare you to carry out scientific, operational, and professional tasks that support both activities of productive and technological nature, as well as diagnostic, analysis, control and management services.
You will also learn about scientific research methods (using the most up-to-date tools) and acquire the ability to work in an interdisciplinary way, both independently and in group.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

You will start by studying basic subjects (chemistry, physics and mathematics) which are indispensable for tackling subjects centred more strictly on biology and necessary for the understanding of the structural biodiversity of microorganisms as well as animal and plant organisms, of their functional and molecular aspects, of heredity and development mechanism, of ecological interactions and biological evolution.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Possible career opportunities include: access to public or private biological and environmental analysis facilities (analysis laboratories, ARPA – Agency for Environmental Protection), to research institutes (e.g. Universities, CNR – National Research Centre) and to industries (pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, etc.); scientific counselling and dissemination in the public or private sphere; junior biologist.

In addition, after graduation it is possible to further pursue studies throughout a Master’s Course, class LM-6 (Biology), or a first level Master’s Degree.

STRENGTHS OF THE COURSE

The Department has been bestowed the “Department of Excellence” recognition given on the national level by the Italian Ministry of education for the quality of its scientific research.
Ongoing projects include: study of marine ecosystems, anthropogenic impact, conservation and restoration, study of the reproduction of bluefin tuna, coral reefs, toxic algae bloom, the spread of emerging contaminants and microplastics in the oceans, “highthroughput” production of recombinant proteins of biotechnological interest, “drug design”.
Students can carry out work placements and participate in research activities in modern facilities (NyMaSBiC Laboratory, Advanced Microscopy Laboratory, Aquarium Laboratory), as well as spend periods abroad (through the ERASMUS, ERASMUS +, Campus World projects), being able to choose between over 45 affiliated universities all over the world.
